A stair handrail is the part your hand actually holds — a continuous rail at a comfortable height along the stair. A balustrade is the full barrier: posts, infill and the rail on top. Handrails run wall-mounted on brackets or ride on top of a balustrade, are typically set around 900 mm above the stair nosing line, and in UAE homes are most often stainless steel, powder-coated aluminium or steel, or timber on a metal core. Handrail or balustrade — which do you need?
If the stair runs between two walls, a wall-mounted handrail alone does the job. If the stair has an open side, you need a balustrade — the guarding is a safety requirement, not a style choice — and the handrail becomes its top rail. What height should a stair handrail be?
Around 900 mm above the pitch line is the widely used residential standard, with landings guarded higher — commonly 1,000–1,100 mm. Local authority and project specifications take precedence where they state figures, and commercial buildings often require rails at both heights for accessibility. What matters as much as the number is continuity: the rail should run the full flight without breaks your hand has to jump.
Which material suits which house?
Stainless steel — slim, modern, low-maintenance; the coastal default. Powder-coated steel or aluminium — any RAL colour, from minimal round rail to ornamental work; aluminium where salt air argues against steel. Timber on a steel core — warm to the hand, classic look, the metal doing the structure. Glass balustrades take a metal or timber handrail on top; the glass is the infill, not the handhold. Matching the handrail finish to the gate and balcony rails is straightforward when one workshop makes all three.
What does proper fixing look like?
Wall rails carry real load through small brackets, so fixings must reach structure — blockwork or concrete, not plaster alone — at bracket spacings the rail section can span without flexing. Balustrade posts fix to the stair structure itself: side-fixed to stringers or concrete, or base-plated to treads with anchors sized for the guarding load. This is why we template on the built staircase, never from drawings: as-built stairs vary by millimetres everywhere, and a rail made to the drawing meets the wall where the wall isn't.
